Marathon Training Update – 8 Weeks until the Flying Pig Marathon

I heard once that the best way to train for a marathon is to run a marathon…  I don’t remember who said that, but I think there might be something to it.  In fact, in 2015 I ran Marine Corps three weeks before I ran Richmond, and Richmond was a fantastic race.

Marathon Training Update

If you’ve been following along, I am training for the Flying Pig Marathon in May. (If you are new to my little corner of the internet, you can read all about why I can’t wait to run the Flying Pig here).

So far training is going pretty well.  I am about two months out from race day, and my weekly mileage is really starting to ramp up.

This weekend, I will be running my long run in Virginia Beach!  I deferred my registration in the Shamrock Marathon last year, so it was either run it, or let it go…  And while I’m not entirely sure I’m ready to run it, I am not one to waste a race registration!

To be honest, I have no goals for this one, and wouldn’t be surprised if I was an hour, (or even more? Yikes!) off my marathon time.  I have 18 miles scheduled, and after I hit 18 who knows what will happen.  Maybe muscle memory will get me through, or maybe I will walk/run the last few miles.  (Even though walking is never one of my goals, other than, of course, through a water stop, so I don’t choke).  😉

Either way, this weekend I only hope to take it easy, enjoy a run on the beach and not injure myself, because I still have some big plans for this spring!

So, If you are running Shamrock this weekend, say, “Hi!” and save me a beer, because I may just be a while.

Have you ever ran a race you were totally unprepared for?  How did it go?

  1. Believe it or not, if you have been continuously increasing your weekly mileage, muscle memory will pull you through! You’re on the right track Karen! You keep doing what you’re doing, and you will cross that finishing line!

  2. I have never done a race before, but I need to do one one of these days!! I’ve been reading so many great resources lately!! Goodluck with the Flying Pig!!
