Why I’m Breaking Up With My Gym

First off, It’s not them, it’s me… 😉

I love the gym I’ve been a part of. I joined when my youngest was less than a year.  Mainly for the childcare.  This was at the beginning of my running journey, and I would never have gotten any miles in otherwise.  For almost three years now, I’ve had the gym treadmill to turn to when the weather was bad, or when my kids were home and I couldn’t go out to run.  My husband though, has been getting up before 4 every morning to run before work.  In all kinds of weather!  Seriously, he’s amazing  I’m not sure I would be quite so committed to running if it was 10 degrees at 3:30 in the morning…  😉

Between that, and this yucky winter that I’ve stayed home on snow days, not wanting to make the trek across town to the gym, we decided to do a little shopping…

Seriously, 10 minutes at the store, and they were so bored they couldn’t even stand up anymore…  😉  (Except my youngest who can’t stop running in circles).

And, we got a treadmill!  It just made sense…  despite all of the awesome classes and the pool at the gym, I really only used their treadmills anyway.  Plus, this way, Zach can stay inside on those really awful mornings as well.  (Although, I’m sure he’ll still run most of his miles outside).  😉

I am a little concerned though that I may lose a little motivation…  I run a little harder when I think people may be watching.  Or when someone hops on the treadmill next to me at the gym, because of course, we’re racing.

Yes, we're racing

…every time.

Also, my “home gym” is now right next to my kitchen.  That has to end badly, right?!  😉

Regardless, I’m excited!  I’m pretty sad to leave the gym, but I think this will be good!  And, I now get to redecorate!

I’ve been trying to get rid of that horrible picture forever!

I’m thinking that wall needs to hold race bibs and medals!

How about you…   Do you train at home?  Or at the gym?

Do you use a treadmill in your training?

  1. Love the idea of race gear next to your treadmill! Motivation for your runs. I’m fortunate to have a treadmill in the fitness room at my apartment complex; otherwise I would never run in the winter. I did a few years ago when I had an AMAZING park two blocks away, but now? Oh no. That desire is gone. Treadmill it is until we’re consistently 50+ degrees.

  2. Treadmill when I have to and keep it under 8 miles. I’m always racing the person next to me, too 🙂

  3. We got a treadmill last year and I LOVE IT! It’s so nice to have it in our house so I can run when my husband is away. We have two little ones so I run once they go to bed at night. Otherwise, I would not be where I am at with my running!
    Yeah for a home treadmill!

    • I haven’t gotten used to running in the evenings yet, so I’m hoping to run during nap times, (while I still can)! 😉

  4. Hi Karen, That’s pretty neat you have your own treadmill at home. It’s always good to change it up, so maybe you’ll surprise yourself and spend more time running or create new running workouts because you’ll have to make it interesting. Your poor gym … I hope you let them down easily. 🙂

    • Ha! I’m sure the gym will have no trouble moving on… 😉
I am looking forward to working on some new treadmill workouts, that part sounds fun!

  5. That wall definitely needs some race bibs! We don’t have space for a treadmill right now or else I might consider it. I’ve been relying on the treadmill for the past several weeks because winter. I do take classes at my gym though, so I’m not sure if I’d want to give that up. Congrats on your new purchase!

  6. I used to own my own treadmill and I loved it! I could run whenever (even at 10 pm!) and be super sweaty in mismatched clothes watching the Kardashians and no one judged me. I’m so jealous you bought one!

  7. I go to a gym but really want to buy a treadmill, but I too worry that I won’t get the motivation to do it at home. Too many distractions! Good luck! What kind of mill did you buy out of curiosity?

  8. JEALOUS!!!! I wish I had a treadmill at home!!
I do love my gym because they have good classes, but I am mostly on the mill if I’m there anyway. I do strength training and yoga at home sometimes though when I can’t get to a class.

  9. Nice purchase! I bought one a year ago when I was training for my first half and needed to be running more often (with 2 kids at home it wasn’t too easy to get my miles in). I prefer to run outside, even when it’s 10 degrees out.. but I also don’t run in the dark alone so for these winter months it comes in handy 🙂
